Wow, here’s a blast from the past—a prototype of Dirt Rag Magazine circa 1988. Not a lot is known about this item. Just that we were armed with a Mac SE, a shitty printer, and a bit of chutzpah. Future posts will discuss actual issues of Dirt Rag and the stories behind them, hopefully enlisting the help of the folks who were there. But first there was this…
Yes, the power of the clip art that shipped with the 1988 Macintosh SE.
How do you like my buttons? I am trying to make it as easy as possible for you to subscribe on some level. How am I doing? I like how this page talks about the combined effort of making this magazine. I think that community was a cornerstone of Dirt Rag. Contributions from everyone. And I hope the community will contribute to my endeavors here on Substack as well. We can’t rely on my memory alone, can we?

While we had some ideas for stories as indicated by the headlines, the text had to be Lorem Ipsum so that we could show potential advertisers as soon as possible. You’ll also notice that land access for mountain bikes was an important part of Dirt Rag from day one…
Ad sizes were created…
And we finished it up with a subscription offer. It’s Neat. It’s Elite. It can’t be BEAT! I’m not sure what that mess of art is. probably some trees, but I will tell you that the decision to charge money for the magazine was a big one. It could have been free but then what value would it have had? Until the end we did our best to keep it affordable fore the average person.
Speaking of subscription offers…
OK, see you soon!
I used to have two or three years worth of old issues of dirt rag, and it was awesome. Wish I had held onto them!
So that's how it started.
